Please be aware that the Brooklyn Public Library did not design the software that runs this system.

  • Mac and Mozilla Firefox users, please be aware that we advise printing from the PDF version (under View select View Item in PDF).
  • Mac users please be aware that although the Safari browser is not supported, Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Firefox browsers on Mac are supported.
  • The minimum browser requirements are Internet Explorer 5.0 or above, or Netscape 4.79 or above.
  • The minimum screen resolution is 800 x 600.
  • When using Internet Explorer for Windows, make sure that the security setting "Run ActiveX controls and Plug-ins" is enabled.
  • If you use any version of America Online (AOL), please read this important information by clicking here.The following browsers are not supported: Netscape 4.07 or earlier on Windows, Netscape 3.x or earlier on all platforms, Internet Explorer 4.x or earlier on Mac, Internet Explorer 3.x or earlier on Windows, Opera on Mac, Opera prior to 6.0 on Windows.

Finding your way around the site

When using the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Online you should avoid using the back button on the browser you use to access the site. The five tabs on the top of the site are essential to using this resource. The tabs each contain different parts of the search, so that you can easily switch between the key word search screen, your search results, and the full-page view of an issue of the newspaper.

Navigation Tabs

Date Search tab: Use this option to select a specific newspaper issue to view.
Keyword Search tab: Use this option to search for words or phrases. You may limit your search to a specific date range or search within the entire repository. Search results can be sorted in various ways. For more information about keyword searching in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Online click here.
Last Issue Viewed tab: Activated only when you have already viewed a newspaper issue. This option displays the last full page you viewed.
Last Search Results tab: Activated only when you have already viewed a list of search results from a keyword search. This option displays the most recent search results you viewed.
Selected Subjects tab: Consists of links to news articles, illustrations, and photographs organized by topic and then chronologically within each topic section. The list of topics is linked to each section, and within each section you'll find the headline of the article, illustration or photograph, followed by the date of the issue and the page number. Each headline or title is linked to the actual item. Browsing these articles and illustrations is a good way to become familiar with the kinds of material you can find in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Online.

What are the links on the left?

The links on the left side of the site contain more information about the content of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, as well as links to the Brooklyn Collection and Brooklyn Public Library. What's Here provides a summary of the material on the site and links to a structural overview of the newspaper. Eagle History and Timeline includes detailed information about the creation and development of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. The timeline is a selection of important and/or unusual events in the history of the newspaper and the city of Brooklyn (and after 1898, the borough of Brooklyn). Genealogy Information has tips and background information about the newspaper for people researching family history.
